the story talks about the childhood of author, by a friend's introduction, he started his first practice in high school water polo team. to start with, when author saw his coach, he spent a lot of time to describe the coach's appearance in details. it was different than the writer's impress. and then, after training the coach said the author was too skinny, too young, too stupid, too weak to be on his team. furthermore, the coach began to "torture" the author in the last week, added more push ups and wind sprints, the coach kept angry whenever the boy failure.  no matter how tried the author was, the coach still asking writer to keep fighting without sympathy, even though fight with old and experiential players, hit it back, and never cry or look out coach.  Apparently, by a period of time training, author won the first game perfectly. when writer ready to blame his coach after game, his coach laughed and be very proud of author, suddenly, author understand that the whole "torture" is a way which his coach wanted to help author in succeed.
in this narrative, writer describe place at very beginning "Steam curled up from the water in the pool and disappeared in the ocher morning light.  Athletes spread themselves about on the deck, lazily stretching and whispering to each other as if the stillness were sacred. " and he described his coach very particular, in appearance " He wore only swim trunks, and his short, powerful legs rose up to meet a bulging torso. His big belly was solid. His shoulders, as if to offset his front-heaviness, were thrown back, creating a deep crease of excess muscle from his sides around the small of his back, a crease like a huge frown. His arms were crossed, two medieval maces placed carefully on their racks, ready to be swung at any moment. His round cheeks and chin were darkened by traces of black whiskers. His hair was sparse. Huge, black, mirrored sunglasses replaced his eyes. Below his prominent nose was a thin, sinister mustache. " for the coach's language, like,“No! No! No!”He shook his head in disgust. “Throw the damn ball with your whole arm! Get your goddamn elbow out of the water!"“You’re not trying! Push it!"“Would you move? You’re too slow! Swim!"“Damn it! Get out and give me twenty!".  Personally, i think the most dramatic arc is that when writer finished game and readied to sneer at coach, his coach laughed proudly and believed he can do this wonderful, author realized the final goal of what the coach did before, brought out his favorite pupil's best.
above all, i was so impressive and moved by his coach, he made me thought about my parents, they driven me studying and growing, although it was hard, when i go over it, i'll be proud of myself as same as my parents proud of me, what they did to me is all because they worried about me and really love me.
